FAIRFIELD MENS 7.5 WINS USTA GEORGIA STATE CHAMPIONSHIP! Advances to USTA Southern Sectionals.....7.5 State Champions

The USTA Combo State Championships concluded Sunday in Peachtree City for levels 7.5, 8.5 and Senior 6.5.  WGTA was well represented with The Fairfield Mens 7.5 taking home the top prize.  The team, captained by Jerry Farmer, finished second in their division in pool play getting into the playoffs as the top second place team.  In the playoffs, both team matches came down to the deciding third match with both matches being decided in a 3rd set tiebreaker (10-8)..... so call them the cardiac kids from West Georgia!  Next stop for the 7.5 tean is the Southern Sectional Championships in Mobile, Al.

A great weekend in Dalton for WGTA Combo State teams!

The USTA Georgia Combo Doubles State Championship (5.5, 6.5 and Senior 7.5) concluded on Sunday in Dalton, Ga with WGTA having its most successful state tournament ever!

The CHS- Johnney Hilts Fall 2007/2008 team won the 6.5 State Championship defeating Columbus 3-0 in the finals.  The CHS team reached the finals by winning their division with wins over Cherokee County, Rome, Macon and Athens.  They will advance to represent Georgia in the Southern Sectional Championships to be held January 23-26 in Mobile, Alabama.

The CHS-TJ Freeman team finished as State Runner-ups in the Mens 5.5 division.  They lost to Atlanta 2-1 in the final match.  Fairfield-Sean Osowski finished the Mens 5.5 as the 3rd place team in the state. Final Mens 5.5 Standings.

The Lakeshore-Patricia Swint 6.5 team won their division before losing in the playoffs 2-1 to the eventual State Champion team from Athens.

The Lakeshore-Dillard Womens 5.5 team finished in second place in their division. narrowly missing the championship match. 
The Mill Pond-Diane Martin Senior Womens 7.5 team finished 4th in their division.

In addition to the CHS-Johnney Hilts team, two WGTA teams have been awarded direct entry into the Southern Section Championships in Mobile, Al. January 23-26.  Lakeshore-Dillard Womens 5.0 and West Georgia Mens 9.5-John Crenshaw.

WGTA Good Sportsmanship Award Announced!


Starting in 2007, we will be spotlighting and awarding acts of Good Sportsmanship in WGTA USTA League Play.  If you play a person or your team plays a team that you feel is worthy of being recognized for good sportsmanship, please send a quick e-mail to Teri Arias or me and tell us about it.  We will make sure that the player(s) receive a special WGTA Good Sportsmanship yellow bagtag.  If you see one of these bagtags on someone's racquet bag, ask them what they did to get it.  At the end of the year, Teri and I will pick the winning nominee.

The first winner of this award is the Stewart's Creek 3.5 Business Womens  team captained by Ruth Milian.  They were nominated  by the Bremen parks and rec 3.5 Womens team.

Congrats ladies!!!

And You Thought City Finals Were Fun!

Winners of WGTA USTA leagues will be invited to represent West Georgia in the Georgia State USTA League tournaments held throughout the state.  Winner of states advance on to play in the Southern Sectional tournaments and those winners advance on to play in the the National USTA League tournaments.  So this is the where it all starts!  Those that have been on teams that played in state tournaments will tell you that it is so much fun to take a road trip with your team and play against the best the state has to offer!
